| Received and Recommended– Fire 25 |
As I’ve said numerous times in other places to various audiences, Jeremy Hilton’s Fire Magazine has got to be one of the marvels of contemporary poetry. Each issue is a a hefty anthology of new work and published, but undeservedly negelected writers. (Indeed, I first discovered the writing of Gerard Casey in a past issue.) Fire 25 is no exception, weighing in at 200 pages and presenting an astonishing variety of poetry ranging from such well-knowns as Peter Riley, Kelvin Corcoran, Andrew Duncan and Andrew Jordan to new names (to me) like Jessica Lowenthal, Christopher Cunningham, and many, many others. And while Jeremy professes a fascination with the poetry of the late coffee-cup-in-one-hand-and-cigarette-in-the-other Texas poet Albert Huffstickler (a writer who never particularly interested me), I yet believe him to be one of the best editors this side of Heaven.
One more marvel awaits the reader of Fire, and that’s the price: 5 pounds or $10.00 U.S. A subscription costs 9 pounds for one year, and is well worth the cost.
