A Note on Ovid’s Keyholes

Collaboration enables us to produce work that we wouldn’t make individually. As a multimedia artist, Christine is constantly producing images—photos, rubbings, sketches, etc—as a continuing practice whether or not a commission or particular work is in view. As a poet who rejects ideas of poetry as autobiography or observation, I’m always happy to receive new stimuli. Creativity flourishes when new relationships are made possible, boundaries crossed, and lines of communication opened up.

Ovid’s Keyholes has its roots in one of our favourite places: the medieval town of Auzon in the Auvergne region of France. When you know that the church has a font and altar dating from the fifth century then the ancient world of myth becomes almost tangible. Christine’s rubbings of medieval doors on Rue Longue—one of Auzon’s ancient streets—combine with my enduring interest in Ovid’s Metamorphoses to uncover a myth that might be buried there.
