Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy! David is a great friend and a great poet. He was my vcollege English teacher in the '60s and an inspiration ever since. He published my own book of poetry, "The Story So Far," under his Writers Ink publishing. Congrats David!

Hi Erik,

I refer you to Swedenborg's collected letters, in one of which he claims to be able to translate Egyptian hieroglyphics using his science of correspondences. The document is there. Take a look. Jesse

I don't know what the original disagreement was about, but your statement concerning Swedenborg's claims about hieroglyphs is a mischaracterization. He didn't claim to have translated any, nor did he claim that the subject of everything written with them was spiritual rather than natural. He only claimed that the basis of the writing system was the science of correspondences, and he offered to write a book describing just how that worked. Although I can only presume that he was not aware of the syllabic usage of the symbols, what he claimed about their symbolic meanings and derivations is totally consistent with modern scholarship.

For many years, Joel Oppenheimer lived near me and Irene (my then wife) in the next town north, Henniker. We had first met in Bar Harbor in 1976. He died of lung cancer in October 1988. Rose, my daughter, five years old at the time of his death, saw a rainbow in the sky over the Uncanoonook Mountains as we left Eliot Hospital to return to Weare. Theresa later informed us that Joel had passed that afternoon. Joel loved women, it is said, that was the theme of the memorial service and kaddish held when he passed. A white dove entered the old white walled congregational church where the service was held. As the ram’s horn shofar sounded, the bird perched in the rafters above the coffin.

Yah, this isn't the most robust system, Jess—but I went in and hacked those lines with some HTML. Is this more faithful to the original?
